E-learning quality resources for Developers

Here I share with you the reliable resources I found until now on my own learning path

Let's talk about boot camps:

Coming from someone that study a different field in Uni, I can say that a boot camp works for me. Programming, is like learning a new lenguage, so personally I found it very useful having a guide at the beginning. A plus under my perspective is , that boot camps are a fast way of learning a bunch of programming languages and tools that you will use as a developer every day. But if you have some experience in the field of computer science, take programming courses in uni, or you are a passionate gamer. Safe to say, you can start learning on your own if you are organized and determinate.

Boot camps can be also very expensive (I also share free ones to apply on a scholarship basis, so keep reading) let's be honest and how to choose one if you are not sure of the quality content they provide? Tricky one right?. So, if you are ready to invest in your education, and want to take a boot camp, I will recommend you:

  • Ask for the content of the course, so you will know clearly all you will learn.
  • Ask how many projects you will build (in order to start your portfolio).
  • Ask if they provide a certification (More important than this is that you actually learn the skills, but having a certificate is always a good boost for your CV).
  • Ask about the teachers you will have.
  • How a regular day on your boot camp will look like.

If you are looking for scholarship based (free of charge) boot camps

  • Factoria F5: they provide front-end and full-stack course for 3 and 6 months each. Pretty intensive. From 8 am to 4 pm approx. with classes Monday to Friday. You have theory classes in the morning and then directly start building projects. Strong practical approach. As said in their website:

"We are a non-profit association that builds the first network of solidarity, inclusive and free digital schools in Spain                     dedicated to offer opportunities to people in vulnerable situations in the world of programming and web development."

Pretty cool right?. They have multiple courses during the year, and you can apply directly on the website, so go and                    check Factoriaf5 (teaching on Spanish)

Another plus on factoria F5, is this program called work in tech, where you have online meeting and guidance on how to             design your path in the IT world.

  • Another great opportunity to take a good and free of charges boot camp is Migracode in Spanish for refugees and migrants in Barcelona: open access, driven by volunteers and in collaboration with the technology and non-profit sector.
  • https://codebar.io/ is another non-profit organization that runs free programming workshop. Please check the website for more information.

If you don't want to do a boot camp and want to learn by yourself:

  • A well-known website is Free code camp is self peace, and you actually have a badge at the end. I really like free code camp because' is a very well put, fun and interactive way to learn.

And then you have other famous e-learning platforms where you can study in a more specific way, different programming languages. Like making a course only to learn in depth JavaScript or Python for example

  • Coursera  is the first e-learning platform I knew (about 8 years ago). They have amazing courses from universities like Stanford, MIT and Harvard. Quality content is 100% guaranty, and you take some of their courses for free (you will learn the skill) and pay a reasonable amount for a certificate if you want it or just take the course to develop skills. You can even make a bachelor or master in this online platform and apply for economic help in some courses.
  • Team tree house
  • I didn't try it yet, but Edx have some very interesting courses, from top universities. Check it and if you take one course please share with me, you experience, will love to hear it Edx
  • developers.google.com

And last but not least. Where I'm studying, atm:

  • IBM skill build learning platform where you have paid basis and free of charge with badge included courses. IBM skill build for more information.
  • And Cognitiveclass where you can take the courses for free, and earn a badge. This platform has more specific content, and what I really appreciate is that they organize courses on learning paths, so you can easily choose a path and take a few courses in order to achieve it.
As a plus, when you feel ready give a look to Missing semester MIT there you will learn how to master the command-line, use a powerful text editor, use fancy features of version control systems, and much more! This will make your everyday as a dev much easier.

Ok people, that's it, all my tips and discovers from the last few months for you. I hope this helps you, and I wish you luck on your devjorney.
